Fabric & Fit Considerations
Different fabrics and constructions can influence how a garment fits. Understanding these details will help you select the most comfortable and flattering size.
Woven Fabrics
- Structured and non-stretch
- Provide a crisp, tailored appearance
- Best to follow the size chart closely
- If between sizes, we recommend sizing up for ease of movement
Knits & Stretch Fabrics
- Naturally flexible and comfortable
- Conform more closely to the body
- Offer more forgiveness in fit
- Choose your usual size for a close fit or size up for a relaxed look
Relaxed & Oversized Silhouettes
- Designed to drape away from the body
- Allow flexible sizing
- Check product notes for specific fit comments
Tailored Styles
- More precise in measurements
- Should fit cleanly through shoulders and bust/waist
- Shoulder width is a key measurement to consider
Fit Notes Based on Body Proportions
Petite (5'3" and under)
- Choose shorter lengths to avoid overwhelming your frame
- Check dress, kimono, and poncho lengths carefully
- High-waisted skirts and pants can visually elongate the legs
Tall (5'8" and above)
- Pay attention to garment length and sleeve length
- Look for styles with longer inseams where available
Curvy / Larger Bust
- Prioritize bust measurements for blouses and dresses
- Wrap and A-line silhouettes often offer the most comfort and shape
Straighter Figures
- Try styles with defined waists, belts, or adjustable ties
- Layering and textured fabrics can add shape and dimension
How to Choose the Right Size
-
Compare Your Body Measurements
Take current bust, waist, hip, and (where relevant) shoulder and inseam measurements. -
Check the Product-Specific Measurements
Match your body measurements to the garment measurements listed on each product. In general:- Your body bust is usually 1–2" smaller than the garment bust for a comfortable fit.
- Your waist/hip is usually 1–3" smaller than the garment measurement depending on style and fabric.
-
Consider Your Fit Preference
- Prefer fitted? Choose closer to your exact measurements.
- Prefer relaxed? Size up for extra ease.
- Plan to layer? Consider one size larger, especially for jackets and blazers.
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm between two sizes. Which should I choose?
If you’re between sizes, we generally recommend sizing up, especially for woven fabrics or fitted silhouettes. For stretchy items, you may choose based on your preferred level of snugness.
Do the garments shrink after washing?
Most ARIS.A pieces are made from stable fabrics, but always follow the care label for best results. Avoid high heat when washing and drying to maintain the original fit and shape.
Why do flat measurements look smaller than my body measurements?
Flat measurements show the garment laid flat. To compare: double the flat measurements (bust, waist, hip) to approximate the garment’s full circumference, then compare with your body measurements.
What if the item I receive doesn’t fit?
Please refer to our Returns & Exchanges policy. If you need help selecting a different size, our customer support team is happy to advise based on your measurements and fit preferences.
Do your One Size items really fit multiple sizes?
Yes. Our One Size designs, such as certain kimonos and ponchos, use relaxed silhouettes that are generously cut to fit a wide range of body types within the indicated size range.
Extra Tips for Accurate Measuring
- Use a mirror to make sure the tape is level and straight around your body.
- Avoid measuring over bulky clothing; thin layers give the best results.
- Take each measurement at least twice for accuracy.
- Measure a similar garment you already own and love the fit of, then compare its flat measurements with ours.
